It can be difficult to figure out where to go next after fast travelling to the Ark in After Us, but the answer is thankfully pretty straightforward.
Starting the second level of After Us is significantly less difficult than it appears. When the game begins, you’ll progress through a pretty straight level that teaches you the basics of platforming and introduces you to the game’s environment and narrative.
Following that, you’ll be transported to the Ark, a lush hub. Because you can travel freely here, it’s tough to determine where to go next. However, starting After Us’ second level is a lot easier than it appears.
How To Unlock The Second Level
When you return to the Ark, you will observe constellations of all the different animals that represent the levels in the game. However, all of these levels are still locked. Even if the dog is shining, it is not quite complete.
There’s nothing you can do around the Ark right now, so instead of continuing in the trees, press the Triangle/Y button to open the constellation screen and select the Dog again.
This will take you to the end of the level you beat at the beginning of the game. A new road forward has now been unlocked, and your sole option now is to proceed with the Dog level rather than any of the other animals.
While it appears from the menu that this is the level you’ve previously completed, the game does not allow you to rerun the prologue level, therefore the level labelled Dog is the game’s second level that you must complete in order to proceed.
Completing The Dog Level
The level itself is rather simple. It’s a linear platformer once more, but this time there’s some combat. This level also has two Memories, which you can obtain at the end. If you’re wondering how to finish the level now that you’ve discovered it (or even how to find the Dog level Memories), keep reading.
You’ll start the level in a tight alleyway surrounded by garbage, with floating stone platforms ahead.Jump on these and continue on the road you landed on. This triggers a short cutscene in which you slide down a rock and jump to safety.
You learn how to wallride here by holding R2/RT near a sandy wall or an advertising board covered in tattered paper. The following part shows you how to climb in this manner, halting when you reach the open sky.
A wrecking ball will be swinging off the southeast corner of the structure at this moment. Jump to it as it swings at you, then land with a double jump and dash. Jump off when it swings to the other side.
Before you plunge down inside a hollowed-out building on floating stones. There’s a little more wallriding here. When you get to the lamppost, don’t go around the rocks clockwise since you’ll come to a dead end.
Instead, leap from the ledge to the first stone. Then turn right and jump to another stone before reaching the lamppost. Avoid plastic bags here, but they are more of a nuisance than a hazard. Proceed through the doorway.
Unlock Rail Grinding
You will learn how to develop vegetation on vines and wires using L2/LT. Then grind along them with R2/RT at the end of this route. This segment will show you how to use grinding, but remember to jump off to the left when you reach the broken wire that sparks at the end and wallride to the platform’s top.
Dog Level Memories
Continue down the linear path until you reach the section where you discover how to cleanse devourers’ hearts and are exposed to Eggy Car game’s combat. Tapping L2/LT launches a missile that turns the slumped over stone figures into light and dust. But they don’t fight back at this point, so it’s not quite fighting.
However, make sure to obtain the devourer soon after the tutorial screen, as this will unlock the first Memory.
Make your way through the podiums, gradually decreasing. As you approach the floating automobiles and the larger region with oil spills. As soon as you land, the sitting devourer off to the right gets the second Memory.
Following this, the first genuine battle part will begin when two of the devourers strike. They are defeated after three hits from tapping L2/LT. And if they get too close, hold L2/LT to drive them away. Following the battle, you’ll notice a glowing blue dot on an oil rig. The level will terminate if you tap L2/LT next to it.
Return To The Ark
When this is finished, you will immediately fast travel back to the Ark, but there is still nothing to do. Instead, press Triangle/Y again, and you’ll be able to choose between two levels under the Dog banner: Dog and Suburbs.Select Suburbs, and you’re good to go.
